My Hero, Guitar Hero
by Aleksandra Yadusky

You’ve seen the commercials.  You’ve heard the commotion.  You may have even
seen a group of kids huddled around a monitor in the electronics section at Wal-
mart.  Guitar Hero, a video game, is perhaps one of the largest musical movements
(OK, besides ‘High School Musical on Ice’) among…well, among a lot of people,
particularly those from middle school to college-age.

It looks a little silly at first.  I mean, the controllers are basically miniature guitars with
no strings.  How do you play a guitar with no strings, you may ask?  You strum a lever
with one hand while playing notes or chords with your other hand on the buttons
aligned on the first five frets to play along with the songs on the game.

It’s the most fun with at least one other person, in a rock face-off, or playing with
someone and forming a virtual rock band.  Different editions of the game have
various selections of artists from particular time periods, like “Rockin’ to the 80’s.”

It’s a lot of fun.  Some of the ways you learn the songs on Guitar Hero are remarkably
close to the ways you play them on a real guitar, and it kind of helps you accidentally
figure out how to play the songs.  So it fun and a little bit practical—maybe even
educational!  All in all, it’s an awesome game simply in the fact that no one gets shot
and therefore no one can accuse my video games of being the devil.  Just those
crazy kids and their rock music.
